Best Forum Practices

I’d like to evolve a list of best practices to use when using the WPF Forum.

Forum Goals:

• Help fellow developers
• Grow body of knowledge
• Enable more people to find the information without asking
• Give feedback to WPF team about difficulties

 

Recommended Steps for Developers with Question:

1) Search before you ask

Search SDK, internet, and WPF Forum

2) If you need to ask, provide a descriptive title

Good Titles:

• Override MetaData Problem, a WPF bug?
• Propogating inherited DPs to the adorner layer

Bad Titles:

• Little WPF/XAML problem — Should have been similar to: "Aero button throb, how to turn off"
• WPF Controls Help… — Should have been similar to: "UserControl with root panel of Canvas has content drawing outisde the UserControl"
• Interesting WPF Problem !!! — Should have been similar to: "Window.SizeToContent problem causes initial page to not render"
  • (note: he has great detail with a full blog entry…which is great.)

3) Provide a good description of the problem, with sample code/markup if possible

4) Make sure that the issue gets appropriately closed (mark the correct answers as answers.)

5) If the sdk should have had more information on this topic, go add it via the wiki based "community feedback" in the correct place in the sdk.

I just did this for the first time on ToolBar’s documentation.

 

Recommended Steps for Answering:

1) Answer the question
1a) Please avoid one line answers…be more complete, it will help everybody.

2) If the question isn’t good enough, tell the questioner where it is lacking

3) Point people towards blogs/samples/sdk entries that may help
